MONTHLY FAVOURITES: Our TOP Picks

This Month's Top Picks: April 2015

Suncoat Nail Polish

Chic nails are all the rage. Ever wonder about the ingredients in nail wraps and conventional nail polishes? They're laden with PVC and other toxins. They may look pretty, but that's where the pretty ends.

This is what makes this Canadian-made nail polish, Suncoat,  so great . . . it's safe to use! Even for your little ones. They're wide array of colours make them an excellent choice.Polish & Peel

About: Suncoat first entered the beauty market in 2002 when their founder and chemist Yingchun Liu, Ying for short, whose background includes both polymer chemistry and organic chemistry, found herself in a predicament: her seven year-old daughter wanted to experiment with nail polish. Yet Ying felt the bevy of hazardous chemicals in nail polish, which includes formaldehyde, toluene and acetates, posed too great a risk to her health. So taking to task her expertise in chemistry as well as her artistic eye for creativity, Ying created a revolutionary new formula of water-based, non-toxic nail polish, designed to provide the same quality and finish as the conventional stuff, but without any unsafe chemicals.

Favourite Memory: Several years back, I purchased the French manicure kit, and my teenage nieces applied it for me. This memory is so special. I rarely take the time to do my nails, but doing nails in community is a bonding experience.

Mabel Retro Children's Clothing

This clothing line combines three of my loves:1) baby clothes; 2) vintage flair; and 3) Canadian-made.  I simply drool viewing her fashion garments online; such creativity and simple beauty.

I've purchased these for my little one: Diaper shirt set & PJ set. I've got these on my "dreaming radar": Shortall set and these oh-so-comfy leggings.

Retro Baby Boy Outfit - 50s

About: Mabel products are truly a labour of love. Every piece is hand made and sewn in Vancouver, BC by Andrea. Each item that you can purchase is made to order and reflects Andrea's freakish need for clean design and vintage tendencies.

Favourite Memory: Using the diaper shirt set for a vintage photo book that I made. You can read about here. These are the kind of memories that this mama wants to bottle up and savour. I imagine one day I will be a granny sitting in a rocking chair looing back at these pics and wishing the memories back. . .

Soberry Sea buckthorn

Are you passionate about health? Have you heard of Sea buckthorn? Sea buckthorn is a hardy, thorny shrub that bears small orange/yellow/red fruit that has an explosion of nutrients.  It has been referred to as the “most nutritionally complete food on the world.” Sea buckthorn is a powerful antioxidant, full of essential fatty acids and an unique array of vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, flavonoids and plant sterols. This berry delivers a rare Omega 7 (palmetoleic acid) fatty acid in the highest concentration in the plant world.

Several years ago, I tried their puree. I love the tart taste of this puree with an incredible nutritional profile.  I also purchased their seabuckthorn herbal tea leaf that has been a wonderful tonic for me in pregnancy.

About:

Solberry is a company that's run and operated by a Canadian couple that is passionate about bringing pure, nutritious products to the market.  Their products are exclusively free of chemical additives.
Solberry works with local growers to provide safe, Canadian grown and processed food to Canadians. Solberry provides a fair balance between growers, processors and consumers using locally grown food and technology. You can also read about them in a recent post.

Favourite Memory:
Recently I tried their nutrition bar. It has probably got to be the best granola bar I have ever tried. . .and the ingredients are ever so pure. It has a slightly tart taste from the berries that just hits the tastebuds just right.

St. Francis Herb Farm

This company has so many products that I love, but before I share what I have enjoyed, let me tell you why I'm a huge St. Francis Herb Farm fan! In a day and age where pharmaceutical drugs are seemingly the response to every dilemma, I appreciate a more traditional view of health: traditional herbal wisdom.  Their concern is to recover and make available some of the perennially valid ways of healing that have been lost or forgotten, and to help people Rediscover the Wisdom® of natural remedies in the true and lasting process of complete healing.

Here are some of my favourites: Coconut and oil ghee, Red Clover Plus Salve, Strest (Adrenal Tonic), and Restoraction (muscle cream). On my list to try is their Tilia Calm (for easing baby colic), Zinc Chamomile Cream, and Deydrated goat whey

About: St. Francis Herb Farm® began as a cottage industry, founded by its present owners, Jeremy and Monique Rivett-Carnac. Drawing on their visionary resources of head and heart, their company has been serving the health needs of North Americans with superior products for more than twenty years. In the early days, Jeremy and Monique learned the art of wildcrafting herbs in British Columbia; today they operate a modern state-of-the-art facility in the Upper Ottawa Valley of Eastern Ontario, having built a ground-breaking and thriving herbal business.

Favourite Memory: In times when I have worked in overdrive, I have turned to Strest adrenal tonic. I really appreciate a Canadian product that employs traditional natural wisdom!

AMP Diapers: Hemp Fitted Diaper

Yup, it's time to discuss diapers again.  The AMP hemp fitted diaper is our favourite day/nap-time diaper. The hemp fibre in it makes the diaper easier to rinse if soiled. We call them the "rainbow diaper". . .and they move quickly through our stash.

They come in two sizes: small & large. AMP Hemp fitted diapers are made of two body layers of hemp fleece (55% hemp/45% cotton) plus an additional layer in the wet zone making three layers of absorbency in the diaper body. An extra three-layer hemp fleece doubler is included with each diaper making a total of 6 absorbent layers of hemp fleece. Soft stretchy elastic gathers at the legs and the back for a great leak-proof fit! Hemp fleece is a nice stretchy fabric that will gently hug your baby. It’s a fantastic fabric for diapers as it’s very absorbent, durable and has antimicrobial properties. High quality resin snaps for ease of use and durability.

About:

Rainbow Hemp Fitted diapers-

As a new mom in the 90′s, Annie Marie Padorie, tried cloth diapers more than once and failed each time. She wanted to use cloth but lacked the support and information. She designed her own and the rest is history. Since everyone had a hard time remembering her name, she shortened the name to AMP.  While no longer sewing all the diapers herself, she now has a wonderful team of men and women that work very hard at making the highest quality products possible. Every AMP diaper is made in their own factory in Winnipeg, MB; their employees make a fair wage and work in comfortable and safe working conditions.

Favourite Memory: It really has been a joy to cloth diaper our baby; I wrote about why we cloth diaper in this post. My favourite memory (well, more humorous than favourite) is walking into the AMP diaper store in Winnipeg with my husband when I was pregnant, and feeling at a complete loss as to what to purchase. We had no idea how to make sense of all the diaper lingo I was reading about online, and needed someone to visually demonstrate the different styles. The assistant actually showed us by diapering a doll!  We were quick-learners, and now are quite efficient {grin}.
